Iâd been home for less than an hour when someone knocked on the front door of my cottage. Surprised because I wasnât expecting any visitors, I went to see who it was. There stood Julie Theron, that infuriating grin on her face.
âYouâre home! Lucky me.â
Unlucky me. âWhat are you doing here?â I asked.
âI want to talk to you. Donât you check your cell phone?â
I shrugged. Iâd noticed sheâd called earlier and hadnât bothered to answer.
âAnyway, when I called you at the library, they told me you werenât working today, so I thought Iâd try you at home. May I come inside?â
âDo I have a choice?â
I opened the door wide and she stepped inside. Smoky Joe chose that moment to see who our visitor was. Julie bent down to pet him.
âSweet kitty,â she said, standing up. âAnd this is one sweet cottage!â she gushed as she bounced from room to room.
âDo you mind!â I snapped, as she was about to set foot in my bedroom. âThatâs private. Off limits. Have a seat in the living room. Iâll be right with you.â
Instead she followed me into the kitchen, chattering on about the cottage as I fed Smoky Joe some treats. I pointed to a kitchen chair. She sat. So did I.
âWhy are you here?â I asked again.
âIâd like us to find out who murdered your fiancéâs uncle.â
Us? âThatâs a matter best left to the police,â I said, hating how prim I sounded.
Julie laughed. âAre you sure about that? So far theyâve done squat. If youâll remember, I was the one who IDâd Alec Dunmore.â
I nodded. âYou did, and you can trust Lieutenant Mathers to take it from there.â
âCome on, Carrie. Weâre talking about your fiancéâs uncle. Hey, I know they werenât close at the time of Mr. Dunmoreâs demise, but Iâm sure you want to find his murderer.â
How does she know all that? âIâm not investigating the murder.â
Julia frowned. âWell, you should be. What was he doing here in Clover Ridge? Was he involved in a business deal gone south?â
I stood. âI have no idea.â
âCould be he wanted to buy the building where his body was discovered. The building the library ended up acquiring.â
âMaybe,â I agreed. âYouâre an investigative reporter. What do you want with me?â
âYou, Carrie Singleton, have the knack. You solve murders.â Julie pointed to herself. âAnd no one tops me in sniffing out information. Weâd make a formidable team.â
When I didnât answer, she added, âI know John Mathers is your good buddy, but I bet he doesnât play fair when it comes to quid pro quo.â
âWhat do you expect? Heâs the police. He canât go sharing information on a homicide case.â
But something must have given away my true feelings on the subject, because Julie suddenly grinned. âAdmit it! It pisses you off.â
I shrugged.
âAnd one more thing, Miss Nancy Drew. You know more about this homicide than youâre letting on.â
